Departing for Galena, Illinois

Got on the road about 0630 and have made it to Galena, Illinois.  Total mileage about 520 miles.  No photos to post yet; northern Illinois is devoid of any good scenery until you get to the bluffs on the Mississippi River.  I'll be crossing it in the morning and we'll try for a scenic overlook of the river.

The ride here was very uneventful.  Traffic around Chicago was very light and I got through there with absolutely no problem.  I skirted the city to the south and was surprised that the usual congestion was non-existent.  So far so good with no problems with the bike.  I will have to get some rubbing compound to get the scuffs out of the tour pak from the gear sitting on it.  Might have to "boost" an extra towel in the morning to lay under all that stuff.  I even managed to average 47.9 MPG at a steady cruising speed of 70 MPH

Tomorrow it's off to Yankton, South Dakota and some Missouri River exploring.

  1. Doc - we haven't met yet (but we will). Let's look at your tour pak scratches at the Katmandu as I can be of some use in that area. An extra towel for now is a good idea. Ride safe!

  3. 520 is a great day Doc. Hey Dell and Karin are riding out with us - great friends - and Dell knows what to do to get those scratches rubbed out - they don't come any wiser in that area. But if you have a microfiber towel or two in your saddlebag, see if you can get one or two of those in between the pak and the stuff above. Cheap and quick fix to keep things from getting worse.

For us, breakfast at 0630 and nuthin' but throttlin' it east after that.
